The Ravens have agreed to bring Cam Jurgens to Baltimore, and there’s a lot to like about what that could do for the line in front of Lamar Jackson.
The Eagles’ announcement puts the cost plainly: Baltimore sends a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick for Jurgens and a 2027 seventh. The deal is pending a physical. Giving up a second-rounder is a serious commitment, especially when that pick could become a young starter on a cheaper contract.
But Jurgens is 27 and under contract through 2029. He took over at center after Jason Kelce retired, made two Pro Bowls and played on Philadelphia’s Super Bowl LIX championship line. Baltimore is paying for someone who already knows the position and could hold it for years.
Let Ioane get back to guard
The part I like is what this could do for Vega Ioane. Baltimore needed him at center against Tennessee after Danny Pinter, Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic landed on injured reserve. That’s a lot to ask of a rookie drafted to play guard.
An established center gives Ioane a chance to return to that job and keep learning it. It also gives the offense someone to build its communication around. Before a snap, the line has to recognize what the defense is showing and agree on who’s responsible for whom. Getting that right matters when you’re trying to protect Lamar or open a running lane.
There’s still an immediate problem to manage. Ryan Mink’s Ravens report, citing ESPN’s Adam Schefter, says Jurgens is in concussion protocol and is expected to debut against Cleveland the following week. That makes Atlanta a game Baltimore still has to prepare for without counting on him.
I like the football logic here. The price deserves scrutiny, and we’ll get a much better idea of the return once Jurgens is healthy and playing. For now, Baltimore has chosen an experienced center who could help the rest of the line settle into place.
